making mosaic potraits

I have seen a few mosaics that look just like a picture of a person. the coloring and expression are so real. how do you even get started with that process. I would like to do one of my two boxers. I just have no clue where to even begin. thanks Sandy

ooh, thats a big question! First you will have to decide which medium you want to work with, such as stained glass? or Vitreous glass? Then you must pick a substrate. Most people work on either plywood or mdf. There are many books on mosaicing, I have read everything the library has, and they have quite a few. That would be my best advice I could give you right now. The books are quite explicite on everything you need to get started! Louella

I always start with the eyes. If you can get those right, the rest of it works out, too! Draw everything out first. I've done skin as a solid color and filled with lots of different colors. Personally, I like the mix of colors. You can play with shading. Check out my website. Have fun!
